Procedure for Appointments for Children With Illness Symptoms

Things are going well with our appointments for in-office evaluation of patients who have symptoms of illness (fever, cough, congestion, runny nose, diarrhea). As per current COVID recommendations, patients with minor symptoms do not require evaluation and should remain quarantined at home. Therefore, in-office evaluation of symptomatic patients should be used for patients with significantly bothersome symptoms where additional diagnosis or treatment may be required for controlling symptoms and maintaining comfort.

In order to help minimize the spread of germs, these appointments will only be performed in a segregated part of the office and will occur only in the afternoon or evening periods. History and instructions will take place over the phone and only the physical exam and any necessary testing will take place in the exam room itself.

Additionally, we will use appropriate tests to help our physicians evaluate your child's symptoms. These include strep test, flu test, RSV tests, and a send out COVID test. We are utilizing a send out PCR COVID test with a turnaround time of 2-3 days. We are not planning on using a rapid point-of-care rapid test at this time given the limitations of the currently available tests.(negative test still requires a confirmation with a PCR test). Also, we are not able to provide COVID testing for patients who do not have any symptoms.

Please see our procedures for illness appointments for important information regarding these visits.
