Procedure for Appointments for Children With Illness Symptoms

3/9/2021

UPDATE*

We are continuing to offer appointments for in-office evaluation of patients who have symptoms of illness (fever, cough, congestion, runny nose, diarrhea). As per current COVID recommendations, patients with minor symptoms do not require evaluation and should remain quarantined at home. Therefore, in-office evaluation of symptomatic patients should be used for patients with significantly bothersome symptoms where additional diagnosis or treatment may be required for controlling symptoms and maintaining comfort. *As schools re-open and sports and other community activities ramp up, more patients with illness symptoms will seek evaluation to more quickly return to their activities. See Clearance for Return to Public Activity for details.

In order to help minimize the spread of germs, these appointments will only be performed in a segregated part of the office and will occur only in the afternoon or evening periods. History and instructions will take place over the phone and only the physical exam and any necessary testing will take place in the exam room itself.

Additionally, we will use appropriate tests to help our physicians evaluate your child's symptoms. These include strep test, flu test, RSV tests, and a COVID test. *The AAP now endorses immediate testing of patients with symptoms consistent with COVID-19.  We are utilizing a send out PCR COVID test which currently has an estimated turnaround time of 2-3 days.

We continuing to use a rapid point-of-care rapid test which, if negative, will need to be confirmed with a PCR test. There are also a limited number of appointments for testing those with no known exposures or illness symptoms.

Please see our procedures for illness appointments for important information regarding these visits.
